Android Market users shifting to 2.x

Google provided information on its developer blog which revealed that 83 percent of visitors to Android Market in the two weeks to 1 December 2010 were using a device powered by an Android 2.x platform, with just 17 percent using an earlier version of the OS. Some observers used the information to highlight the fact that the widely predicted fragmentation of Android is not taking place, although the survey only represents visitors to Android Market and not the total Android user base – although arguably for developers, this is the most important part of the community.

Of the Android 2.x versions available, Android 2.2 was slightly more popular than Android 2.1, making up 52.3 percent of this base. Android 2.2 has achieved sharp growth, to account for 43.4 percent of the total visits to Android Market since August 2010, undoubtedly aided by the rapid growth in sales of new Android-powered smartphones. Android 2.2 powered devices include Samsung's Galaxy S, the HTC Desire and some Motorola Droid smartphones. The company does not provide absolute figures to go with its percentages, meaning it is not possible to see how big the active Android Market visitor total is. The next version of the platform, Android 2.3, is expected to be released in the near future, with a more tablet-oriented incarnation also in the works.
